« Back to Portfolio

This part of the Bootham School group is set in the heart of York city centre. The school has made substantial investment erecting a new porters lodge, implement shed and professional play tennis courts in the grounds of the school as well as a new walkway access linking all of the facilities.

The porters lodge now greets all arrivals to the school premises constructed using an ornate timber frame structure together with glulam beams. The foundations were constructed of Insitu suspended concrete slab supported on perimeter insitu concrete ground beams and tubular steel piles. The building envelope as noted above is made up of a timber frame with a mixture of facing brick and cedar board cladding, together with timber windows and doors.

The roof structure uses glulam timber beams, timber rafters and plywood decking with a Sarnafil single ply membrane roof with a Sedum “green” roof covering with irrigation system. Mechanical installations  included under floor heating, toilet and kitchen facilities. Electrical installations included lighting, power, intruder and fire alarms, data linked to school system and external voice communication to main school. Internal finishings included dry lining, decoration and  floor coverings throughout. External works included block paving to pedestrian areas, tarmacadam to car park, landscaping, and associated drainage.

The implement shed construction involved tubular steel piling supporting a reinforced concrete raft with a steel frame above. The envelope comprised block walls clad with cedar boarding, a plywood roof deck on timber joists finished with a Sarnafil single ply membrane roof with a Sarnafil "Green" Sedum covering incorporating an irrigation system. Secure by design timber windows and external door together with a pair of electrically operated roller shutter doors we also installed.

Electrical services comprised electric heating and extract fans, lighting, power, cctv and intruder and fire alarms. Mechanical services involved a cold water supply to serve the external wash down area. This was fitted with a brake(anti syphon) tank.

The goods store and office were plastered and painted and fitted with sheet vinyl flooring and carpet tiles respectively. The main implement store had a power floated concrete floor with paint finish. External works comprised block paving, a concrete wash down area. Roof drainage and drainage to the wash down area was taken to a soakaway. The building incorporates a large implement/machinery store together with a separate goods store and office.

In addition to these new build constructions the company was asked to carry out the formation of new tennis courts consisting of retaining wall, sports fencing and play surfacing. The works were undertaken alongside busy, occupied facilities and our team were commended on their stringent attention to health and safety on site to provide a safe working environment for our operatives, and also minimising any risks to the staff, visitors and students through meticulous planning, incorporating working ‘out of hours’ where deemed necessary.
